Trail Running Taught Me That Falling Isn’t Failure

Trail Running Taught Me That Falling Isn’t Failure

I wiped out three times during my first trail ultramarathon.

Stubbed my toes more times than I could count.

Lost my fluids five miles before the next aid station from landing on my bottle.

By the end of the race, I was covered in mud with badly bruised toenails, and wondering how anyone actually enjoyed this sport.

Then something unexpected happened.

I crossed the finish line…

…and immediately wanted to do it again.

Looking back, I don’t remember the pain nearly as much as I remember what it taught me.

Every fall reminded me to get back up.

Every mistake taught me something I carried into the next race.

Every challenge I encountered made me a stronger runner.

Growth rarely looks impressive while you’re living it. More often, it looks like getting back on your feet one more time.

That’s why I believe ultramarathons are never really about the distance.

They’re about becoming the kind of person who keeps moving forward after life knocks them down.
